We built our case for ROI independent of the podcast audience. Basically, we get expert opinion and commentary on topics related to our industry, which we can repurpose on the blog and through social media. That's the real benefit, and if the podcast itself takes off then that's gravy.

I'd say being too narrowed in your focus on how to exploit the podcast and where you expect to see value is a big one.

Hi @Eric Doty (Superpath) I am doing a Linekdin Live on how to be a great podcast host next week, so this is good timing.
@Lindsay McGuire had great input above "The guest outreach/prep/communication is crucial."
Which is what our Linkedin Live is all about. How not to be a bad host.
Plan, communicate, review, post followup are just the basics, in depth you get into so much more.

  1. Don’t “launch” without a backlog of content already produced, as publishing cadence is important for compounding success
  2. Scheduling and editing the episode take longer than you think
  3. Have a unique angle—because while the Q&A format is tried and true—you’ll want more than just your guest’s names/brands to help you stand out
  4. Like any content, understand what the value of your content is to your listener—and use that as the editorial northstar vs what your company wants to cover

To add to @Lindsay McGuire’s point:

"Understand the why before starting so you can measure success accurately. Downloads are usually only a fraction of the story/success metrics."

Try to make it a win even if no one listens. Podcasts are slow (and hard) to grow. Ours has a good download number now, but even if no one listened we'd get to a) talk to smart people and learn stuff about how content is done within target clients' companies b) repurpose content for social / blog and c) build relationships in our industry. We also get to showcase clients and their stories. It's got so many utilities beyond the downloads.

Hi @Eric Doty (Superpath)
My founder Rish had the most interesting podcast session with Jeremy Shere, the renowned podcast host of the popular ‘The B2B Content Show’.
He had some really valuable insight to give on the format, podcast topics, where people are going wrong, channels, guest list, the overall theme and consistency, common mistakes to avoid, etc.
I think that can really help you out.
You can give it a listen here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5M7EwX16QybIJROytr61Be

Some of my thoughts:
• If you’re going to do video work alongside it, buy a good camera, especially if you work on a Mac.
• If you can book a few notable names for your first few interviews, use those in outreach. The hardest part when starting out is the lack of proof/validation/examples when doing guest outreach.
• Know that a podcast is a long game. Results generally trickle in slowly over time.
• Understand the why before starting so you can measure success accurately. Downloads are usually only a fraction of the story/success metrics.
• The guest outreach/prep/communication is crucial.

Just discovered this channel yesterday! We're working on launching our company podcast. Any big mistakes to avoid for a first-time podcaster that you wish you had known when you started?

Hi @Dominick Costantino
You can try Rev - it is one of the best video transcription services.

We too have even created different language versions of a video for different companies. For example- we have created Taskworld’s clean and professional walkthrough video. It was also translated into French, German, Japanese, Korean to personalize it by geography (We used SynthesiaAI voice)

Taskworld English: https://vimeo.com/531905970
TaskWorld French: https://vimeo.com/561411633
Taskworld Japanese: https://vimeo.com/579941407

DM me if you think I can help.

Hi folks! I’m at a B2B SaaS company and have inherited our podcast. I am looking for a source for B2B podcast benchmarks on downloads, consumption, etc. Thanks so much!

Timothy Ware March 21, 2023 at 07:27 PM

Rev (paid version) has been good for us. The errors have become predictable and solvable with search+replace.

Any marketing related podcast suggestions for someone who's at their early stage of the career?

Greg Lees March 17, 2023 at 06:37 PM

I know this is a little more on the PR side, but would anyone have advice on getting various experts at a company to get on relevant podcasts in our industry? We’re a software company that mainly works with the Dept of Defense if that is relevant.

Lindsay McGuire March 14, 2023 at 02:07 PM

I’ve used Temi and Trint before, both pretty nice. I did not like Descript.

Matt McGregor March 13, 2023 at 09:33 PM

+1 on Rev. Pay for a human to do it. Very quick turnaround and accurate, especially with weird accents like mine.

Dominick Costantino March 09, 2023 at 03:42 PM

Anyone have a favorite transcription service? Looking for white-glove, publishing ready

Monica Barriga-Weyers February 11, 2023 at 12:32 AM

Hello Podcasters! I'm new to the channel. I'm drafting a call out for a partner or co-host for my podcast, which you'll see soon. I just wanted to introduce myself, I'm Monica, from the Bay Area, and I run WOCTalk.biz podcast for women and allies to learn from advanced professionals about how to strategize and grow in their tech/media careers. I'm looking forward to learning more about this community here. My background is in digital content marketing and multimedia theater. In a previous life, I was an ESL teacher. Feel free to connect here on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mb-w/ Fun fact: I used to be an aerialist in LA. Now I run, but I still love to dance and roast coffee beans! ☕ 👟👟 Oh, any online meetups happening for podcasters? Thanks!

How long does it usually take for a first episode to show up on the Apple Podcast app? We were everywhere else in under 6 hours but Apple hasn't listed us after 5 days

Justina Matthew January 28, 2023 at 11:07 PM

Otter.ai

Timothy Ware January 24, 2023 at 05:48 PM

Does anyone have a good English transcript editor? The ones coming out of Gong are not good enough.

Renga Padmanabhan January 10, 2023 at 04:16 PM

this prologue got me intrigued @Timothy Ware please send the first episode when it’s out :)

Timothy Ware January 10, 2023 at 03:49 PM

I'm in the process of launching a podcast for my company. We have one episode with the editor, a second recorded, and the next six guests lined up. The goal is to post an episode every month in 2023, which is pretty modest.

Our ROI expectations assume zero people listen to the podcast. The fact is that it is really hard to write good content for our enterprise ICPs, and it is also really hard to justify writing for them as the content is not going to be SEO friendly (nobody, including the people who would find value reading the content, is searching for the topics we are looking into).

So what's the point? We basically get 12 somewhat industry famous people to speak on a topic that is interesting to our enterprise ICP, which I can then repurpose into articles, LinkedIn posts, emails, newsletters, etc. All of this is going to cost us $20k in labour over the year (that's mostly a sunk cost anyways), but just producing the content without the podcast would have been more (we priced it out), and if we managed to land a single enterprise client with this better targeted content, the podcast is paid for.

Will it work out? Who knows, but it's the best idea we've had thus far for getting affordable content that is interesting to enterprise prospects, so it is worth testing for a year.

Khyati November 18, 2022 at 12:19 PM

Hi @Renga Padmanabhan
Short answer: It is leap of faith just like it is for beginning to work on SEO strategy or Social Media posts.

Ask you audience what kind of podcasts to they listen. Are they buyers, users or influencers?
If your audience is already listening to something, it’s definitely a good start.

I would strongly recommend repurposing the content in multiple formats - social media clips, blogs. Here are some examples: https://www.contentbeta.com/podcast-editing-service/

Added to my listening queue, too!
