@Hsing Tseng Probably advice that sits lower on the priority rung but important nonetheless:
I kept my website artsy and true to who I, and didn't go for a "traditional and clean" look to match the industry, for example.
In my early days, I got a lot of advice to nix the hard-to-read fonts and artistic illustrations to make my offer clearer. I didn't do ANY of that and three months ago, I got a direct message from a client I wanted to work with THROUGH my website form, saying he thought it was cool.
My two cents here are possibly cheesy and trite, but ring true however: keep what makes you, you. For some, an artsy website may be a block; for others, it's exactly the reason they'd want to work with me.

@Carol J Alexander Youβre absolutely right. And this is one of those situations where I got myself into a sticky situation very early on so now itβs hard for them to see beyond that number and realize that the equation has become lopsided. I plan to drop them next month, frankly.
@Mike Straus Youβre not wrong! While Iβm not quite there yet, as I said, Iβm being shafted on this one. My other clients are all a-okay paying good rates, but this one, WOOF.

I do have a couple of new leads! And they haven't been skittish about the pricing AT ALL. (Blogs, not LinkedIn.)
The client I'm talking about, I've been working with for almost 1.5 years and at every step they've pushed back on pricing, but I kinda let it go every time. Not now, though. New year, new me.

This is strange. For one, if you truly want to "test" writing chops, you need give the writer space to let ideas simmer. I can come up with a lot of stuff in 15 minutes, but will it actually be in the final draft? Probably not.
Second, how does this account for pre-writing practices like research?
NGL, the way this particular "live" test is structured is very Squid Game-like.

In my experience, this has been entirely dependent on the client's goals. If their goal is just to get out there fast, I usually optimize pretty heavily using the tools they've advised. And they also track scores for each article pretty diligently.
For other clients who play the "long game" of building authoritative, voice-led content, and realize that rankings follow closely after if not immediately, I do the bare bones of SEO while focusing more and more on SME insights, Reddit deep dives, and first-person content.
But for both kinds, my focus is on giving readers unique content that isn't just a regurgitation of the SERPs.

I use Taplio on and off for LinkedIn formatting, it's pretty straightforward, gets the job done. But a friend introduced me to Kleo which IMO performs way better as an extension.
