Hi there! I’m just past Olympia and excited to meet some “neighbors.” Looking forward to local meetups.

@Garrett Oden depending on your publication format, how about something like a daily/weekly insight that only includes one long quote on a specific topic (similar to the “news you can use” idea except without a news hook).

If you’re in the US, these are things that would classify freelancers as employees. Independent contractors cannot be required to attend mandatory trainings.

If you also want to take a 1:1 approach in addition to finding a community, you could look for people on LinkedIn who fit your criteria and suggest a call to explore ways of networking/ working together. If you click, you can explore the idea of meeting regularly. I’ve done this with a few people and those relationships can become meaningful over time.

I agree with Erik--if you’re having to educate the customer or have a hard sell on an idea, it’s probably not a good fit for you.
But it also depends: Are those types of customers generally the niche you want to be in? Sound like you may be working with really small companies or startups and if you want to be in that niche, you may need to selectively work with some clients how need more education—but in this case, your approach should be more consultative out of the gate because you’re the expert.

@Alexander Boswell wow, that is rough. I thought you may have been talking about some political or Elon drama, sorry about that! I haven’t been on Twitter in months.

Working on a proposal for presenting at a marketing conference. What burning questions do you have about content marketing for a B2B marketing writer/strategist, or trends you’d want to hear about, especially in the tech/SaaS/cybersecurity space?

@Samantha Finken Sounds like a lot of places to hang out! I love that there’s a community entirely for Bridgerton, I need to “get out” more .

@Alexander Boswell so true about Twitter. At least we have it for the entertainment value?

I’m curious, in what social channels do you, content marketers, hang out these days (you personally, not the brand)? Is Twitter/X still a thing? Is Substack the “new” thing? I realize many of us don’t have much time to linger on social media, but when you do, what’s your destination?

You can point out that you’re like any other professional who offers a valuable service or expertise in a specific domain. Would they ask their surgeon, their HR consultant, or whomever, to earn their business with a free trial?

@Octavia Drexler I love your newsletter! I’m a marketing writer by day and creative writer/mixed media artist-in-training by night—feel free to DM me if you need more people to interview.

If you like cybersecurity, you don’t need a super technical background for a career like security awareness. Here’s why these jobs are going to be in even higher demand.

Besides optimizing my LinkedIn page, I’ve been connecting with relevant people in my niche, both industry SMEs and marketing roles. The likelihood of your profile coming up on search goes up it you have mutual connections.

I have to interview SMEs quite often for trends articles and found that a few PR platforms are much better than others (I’ve had great results with Qwoted because their vetting is better, though not foolproof). But these days you absolutely have to interview people you don’t know “live” (call/Zoom etc.) vs. getting answers in writing, to make sure they’re not feeding you ChatGPT advice. You can also build relationships with a few PR agents representing companies in the industry you’re covering and ping them for proposed sources; I’ve worked with some who were excellent and saved me hours and hours of sourcing SMEs.
