Really depends on your business, but if always try to tie it to business metrics. We’ve moved away from
Getting goals for rankings and organic traffic in many cases and tried to tie SEO efforts to revenue generating activities (leads, calls, sales, etc)

#freelance-talk - December 04, 2024 at 08:29 PM

All good man, thanks for clarifying! An yeah, I have had to pay the a-hole fee as a client before (happily!)

#freelance-talk - December 04, 2024 at 05:52 PM

Amazon: Free shipping by Wednesday, or get it today for $9.99

#freelance-talk - December 04, 2024 at 05:50 PM

@Ken the client simply wanted to get things kicked off right at the start of the year for both budget and strategic reasons.

Not sure why you’d consider this an “asshole add on”. It's directly correlated the the value that I am providing them, which in this case is prioritizing their project and helping execute sooner then when I had communicated. They knew my capacity and timelines when they asked if I could start sooner, so shouldn't there be a premium on that?

#general - December 03, 2024 at 12:42 AM

Open to Canadian based agencies?

#freelance-gigs - November 29, 2024 at 05:09 PM

Agree. I think the whole concept of "pay per task" with no definitions around what the tasks might be is really hard to sell/understand, regardless of the price. You could tell me that you pay $500 per task and that still might not be worth it depending on the task. It would make more sense to be more specific about tasks, or choose a different payment model (hourly, project fee, monthly retainer, etc.)

#freelance-talk - November 28, 2024 at 05:00 PM

is $2500 a lot? not enough? I guess it depends on my own opportunity cost

#freelance-talk - November 28, 2024 at 03:28 PM

I pitched a client this week and told them I could start on Feb 1st, based on my capacity. They asked if I could start sooner (Jan 1) as this is high need for them and they need to get executing first thing in 2025. I certainly could, but would need to shift some priorities around with other clients and likely work overtime (longer hours, nights and weekends, etc.) It would not change my scope with them, I would just be a bit over my normal capacity...

Could I / should I charge a premium for this? Something like an extra $2,500 for a "prioritization fee"?

Is this a thing? What do you call it? How much do you charge?

#freelance-talk - November 27, 2024 at 04:56 PM

While we're at it, you should maybe also check out https://www.hirethestarters.com/

#freelance-talk - November 27, 2024 at 04:56 PM

Ah yea, NDAs are killers for that! I found them through a connection/partnership with a Fractional Jobs listing. I too had never heard of them, but applied as well.

#freelance-talk - November 27, 2024 at 04:23 PM

Does anyone have experience with https://www.reallygood.pro/ ?

#pets - November 27, 2024 at 11:14 AM

My ol boy turns 12 today, so we bought him a big new comfy bed. Looks like he might have to share it.

#general - November 21, 2024 at 04:50 PM

I have only ever done them as part of later stage interviews and have only ever completed them if they were compensated.

#general - November 20, 2024 at 08:30 PM

thanks, yeah I know all these things, I was more so looking for an actual template document. A client of mine was asking for one

#general - November 19, 2024 at 08:18 PM

Prioritize and write great content that solves your users needs/problems and is better than what already exists out there. Don't just write the same old thing that your competitors are doing. Add an angle, your spin, some unique data, some more depth, etc

With that said, leveraging keyword research and doing other "SEO things" like structuring your content well with H1, H2s, etc, having strong internal links, building backlinks, ensuring strong performance and site speed, etc. is still crucial.

#general - November 18, 2024 at 08:59 PM

Yep for blog content

#general - November 18, 2024 at 08:42 PM

Looking for a solid blog content brief template for an SEO working with content teams 👀

#general - November 15, 2024 at 05:23 PM

Yes, I have. One of my clients’ blog traffic is down over 20% since September due to AI overviews and ZCS. All on informational blog topics.

#pets - October 31, 2024 at 02:35 PM

spamming the pet channel and getting in the way of dog pics is the best way to get banned.

#general - October 31, 2024 at 02:34 PM

Yeah it would be helpful! I've seen other Slack groups have channels like #feedback or #ask-for-help

#freelance-gigs - October 31, 2024 at 01:07 PM

oh boy

#freelance-talk - October 31, 2024 at 01:04 PM

@Linsey Knerl I totally agree. I find I get more and better work under the "consultant" or "advisor" umbrella. I was very aspirational towards fractional work early on in my journey and have landed a couple good gigs, but oftentimes I was treated like FT employee and scope creep was real.

#freelance-gigs - October 29, 2024 at 12:12 AM

@Ben Watkins might be your guy!

#freelance-talk - October 28, 2024 at 05:57 PM

@Vadim Tchernine I don't do any cold outreach or pitching. I am, however, promoting my business and the types of problems I am solving in an effort to help my network know what I am up to. Some new clients are folks I know (have worked with before, industry acquaintances, former clients) and others are referred to me from the first group. As I promote my business more, I am getting more leads from net new people who came across me on LinkedIn or Slack groups.

#general - October 28, 2024 at 04:22 PM

In my experience you can leverage AI to create some programmatic content, but you still need to provide something unique and valuable. This is where proprietary datasets come into play

#freelance-talk - October 28, 2024 at 04:20 PM

Gotcha. I guess my retainers have been more steady/predictable. When a ton of work does come in that’s above scope, I charge extra (and a premium) to get it done.

So when things are slower, I still make my baseline retainer fee, and when they are busy I’m able to charge extra and make more. I’ve definitely had some crazy months where I bit off more than I could chew

#general - October 28, 2024 at 04:18 PM

Yeah I did the comparison crawl. Can’t seem to export allll urls though

#freelance-talk - October 28, 2024 at 03:42 PM

I structure all of my agreements as retainers, so even if the amount of work goes down, I still make $X every month. That really helps with the "inconsistencies" and fluctuations with revenue

#freelance-talk - October 28, 2024 at 02:09 PM

For me, it's all been through my network and referrals.

#freelance-talk - October 26, 2024 at 10:54 AM

I took the jump last September. It was way more challenging than I expected, and it took about six months for things to really click, but once they did, things have been fantastic.

#general - October 25, 2024 at 04:55 PM

SEO folks, I need a hand...

I am doing a comparison crawl for a client's new site in Screaming Frog and we identified a delta of 601 URLs from the staging site to the current site. We want a list of this delta (or lists of both site's URLs)...but can't seem to get it. What am I missing?
