Twice, I’ve applied for jobs, had hiring managers really impressed with the quality of my samples, gotten through to the next round of some kind of written test — only for them to email me the next day changing their minds. Don’t offer me the next round unless you mean it!!

I recommend applying to Scripted - they have lowish rates (7-10c per word) but they have a lot of work and it’s a great place to get some experience.

Personally I get a huge amount of value from the job postings. If that were paywalled, I’d pay $10 a month 100%. Secondarily, I love the work-career-advice channel, and would gladly pay for that, too. I think both of those channels would also benefit ME if they were paywalled, i.e. I had less competition applying for jobs AND was getting/reading advice from folks further on in their careers.

I typically explain something like “Oh, I’ve had nightmare clients in the past - nothing against you now in particular, but I’ve worked it into my system and it’s just my process.” The good ones get it and are happy to work with me.

(Also, obvs your client and your decision but any kind of resistance/pushback like this has NEVER been a good sign for me personally.)

Do you know what their concerns are? Like are they literally just worried you’re gonna walk off with their cash?

The problem with posting rates like this is it forces writers to compete on price, rather than expertise.

By introducing a floor, it makes sure writers get paid what they’re worth, rather than the minimum someone’s willing to accept. I’m sure you’d be able to find a writer willing to do it for a penny a word. Does that mean that’s all you should pay them? No.

5 cents a word is worse than some content mills I’ve been on. Especially for technical writing, I’d expect to earn much more than that, much less a bare minimum of 10 cents. You only want to offer half that.

I loved this thread where we discussed the rates, and I recommend you check it out if you want more insight into why it’s important to value the work writers 🙂

I’m a mid-level freelancer and charge around 25-50c per word. I think 10c feels like a good floor to me. $100 for a 1,000w post would have felt great at the beginning of my career.
