This is very kind of you, @Melissa, The CPA Who Writes ! I have often wondered about Sara’s question and was reminded of it recently. Thanks for the answer. I’m also commenting so I’ll be notified of future questions. 😊

Love @Catharine Montgomery"s lead of sharing LI profile. If you're open, share yours as well. Here's mine: https://www.linkedin.com/in/caroljalexander/

Yup! That’s closer than me.

I’m sure it gave you a jumping off point. But in 12 lessons it’s impossible to cover all a college journalism track provides and that’s why you found it lacking once you hit the pavement. That said, it looks like a good resource to recommend to those looking to learn the basic mechanics of writing. I’ve talked to so many new freelancers who struggle to retain clients and when I look at their work, it’s because they lack the ability to even write a paragraph, let alone sequence an entire article. Thanks for sharing. I’ll bookmark to recommend to newbies.

I’m curious, @Dominic Kent , about the diploma in freelance journalism. Care to share?

#local-dc - January 21, 2025 at 07:34 PM

It was 5 degrees when I got up this morning.

#local-dc - January 21, 2025 at 07:33 PM

Hey people!
I asked for DC but I'm actually a bit away in the Shenandoah Valley.

#CJE3XC0H3-announcements - January 21, 2025 at 07:31 PM

I second DC/NOVA

I'm with Nicole on the pricing. And I wouldn't waste my time with low-ballers. They're stealing from you because while you're trying to convince them you are worth it, you could be landing a client who sees the value. People will negotiate up a few hundred, maybe, but never go 5x what they had in mind.

If you are not experts in the blog niche, then find those who are and get their expert input into the topics. Showing experience and expertise may appease the search gods and it builds credibility with your readers.

#general - January 14, 2025 at 07:31 PM

I don't know the why's because I wasn't the director but I'm guessing it was two-fold: 1) our approach was for the social content to be a repurposing or promotion of our blog content so when social had ideas, we would share what long-form content could be part of that campaign and suggest social posts to promote the long-form pieces, and 2) our social team (more like a single person) struggled to keep the ideas flowing. In my two years there, they hired and fired three social media coordinators. Video was included in the social meetings because the main channels needed video content but Video was also on its own for YouTube and we were rarely included in brainstorming or planning YT content.
How did it work? Well, every US based content team member except the DOC and the video director were laid off in October so I think our lack of organization and direction was obvious.

#general - January 14, 2025 at 01:25 PM

Since you haven’t the time to interview, does their site have case studies or testimonials from which you can extract data or quotes?

#general - January 14, 2025 at 12:35 AM

I’m no longer in-house but when I was, the content team fed social. But not the other way around. For instance, we would have social planning meetings and the entire content team, including video, would attend. But when we had strategy or planning meetings for other content, the social team wasn’t included.

Trust me, as a freelancer you will also juggle deadlines, campaigns, and client calls. But I do wish you the best. As far as finding clients, get your LinkedIn profile updated and polished, and start “working the room” in there. Don’t be spammy, just build relationships. Reach out to low hanging fruit—people you already know— and let them know what you’re doing: “If you know of anyone who needs a content marketer, please let me know.”

I signed up for Medium just to read this. Wild!

#general - December 23, 2024 at 05:19 PM

We used Scribe when I was in-house. It was a PITA. If you use it, definitely watch training videos. Not one team member liked it.

#general - December 19, 2024 at 09:07 PM

If you’re on the paid tier of SuperPath, the monthly 1:1s and group calls are very helpful.

#general - December 19, 2024 at 05:15 PM

To answer your questions, @Nishrath, Qwoted has an option to flag AI responses and if a person is flagged, you will be notified if they respond to your request. But my work-arounds have been to be very specific, as Mandy pointed out. And to not put the questions in the request but to ask for a phone interview. Phone interviews are better, anyway, because you always get your best quotes when an SME rambles.

No expert worth quoting will give you the time of day if you don’t disclose where the article will be published. And letting them know when it is, is a common courtesy that shows your appreciation of their time and energy. Besides, once they know it’s live, they will want to share it on social media, which is a win for you.

#general - December 18, 2024 at 08:44 PM

Seriously? Closing down communities seems like a drastic move. I think they must not be willing to flex. Gotta be a Gumby in this business.

#intros - December 16, 2024 at 05:10 PM

I am!

#intros - December 15, 2024 at 07:20 PM

Hey Noah! Imagine meeting you here. 😊 Let me know if I can help you in any way.

#general - December 04, 2024 at 01:28 AM

Following. I’m interested in how to use Reddit for a solo marketer.

#general - December 01, 2024 at 07:17 PM

Qwoted, Help A B2B Writer, LinkedIn connections, social media groups, universities, industry organizations, Chamber of Commerce members, industry lists like 30 under 30. Really, I could keep going.

#content-collab - November 25, 2024 at 01:17 PM

Slick

Hi Sean! Welcome. This is small-worldish but I used to work with a guy who was into sandwiches. He would take orders and deliver. I got one once, when I was in the office and it was amazing. His name is Chris. You should look him up. https://www.instagram.com/betweentwoslicesjc/profilecard/?igsh=c213aWo1MjM2amJ1

I built my site on Wordpress and I have no problem with load time. But then WordPress has a learning curve.

#general - October 29, 2024 at 08:50 PM

Any Wordpress experts here? I got a notification from my host saying my site is over the CPU seconds metric and Ive been going through all the support materials they sent and I can’t find anything out of the ordinary.

#general - October 29, 2024 at 01:35 AM

Brandon, have you considered ghost writing the founder LI posts? Someone who has that skill could write them in batches, then have her sign off on them before posting to her profile.

#general - October 02, 2024 at 01:19 PM

If your client has made you the admin on their company page, it should show up on the left-hand sidebar of your home page. When you go there, you can see the followers under the analytics tab.

#general - October 02, 2024 at 01:11 PM

Hi @Alyson. Are you saying you want to see who follows the business page of your client? And you’re an admin on your client’s business page?

#general - October 02, 2024 at 11:38 AM

That would be a dream if LinkedIn did have that.

#general - September 28, 2024 at 01:08 PM

A salary should be based on what the company can afford to pay, not the employees conditions. Before remote work became possible, there have been numerous reasons for a person to be compensated more than their coworkers, besides work quality or responsibility, but they haven’t been. Single parents and the chronically ill need more money to live. But I’ve never seen a job ad that said, “will pay more for single parents and diabetics.”

#general - September 23, 2024 at 06:36 PM

It’s not just a global question. I’ve seen ads for “US based remote employees” and in the ad it says “salary geographic dependent”. You’re the first person to give me the opportunity to say I believe that policy is totally unjust.

#general - September 23, 2024 at 01:08 PM

You can also use AI in the process without actually publishing verbatim what it writes. For instance, use ChatGPT to create an outline, generate ideas, organize data, compile lists, all the nitty gritty tasks that are a time suck for you. Sounds like they want you to use it to increase production—crank out those three posts a week—not necessarily compose the narrative.

#general - August 16, 2024 at 11:48 AM

What can you do but your best and keep your eyes open for a better opportunity? I would work as though it were the best job with the best managers in the world so they have no reason to let you go. Then, if they do, it’s on them. You know you did everything to succeed.

#general - August 08, 2024 at 11:43 AM

Feel free to DM me.

My favs from the International Roofing Expo earlier this year: an Iron Flask (had to spin a wheel to win that one), chocolate candy that looked like gravel (it was delicious!), and tote bags. I use them for groceries, I don’t care if they all have building product company names on the side.

#general - July 24, 2024 at 01:07 AM

No hashtags on LinkedIn.

#general - July 19, 2024 at 08:24 PM

Not on that platform but I do get them on Qwoted. They have a flagging system so if someone is reported, their profile has a huge warning on it. Unfortunately, for anyone I don’t have a solid relationship with, I run responses through GptZero.

#general - July 15, 2024 at 03:18 PM

Thanks, Rachel. As I thought, this would be non-solicited, so too much.

#general - July 15, 2024 at 01:34 PM

If someone or a business comments on a LinkedIn post to drop a link to their own content, is that spammy to you? It feels spammy to me and someone on our team has asked me to do it.

#content-collab - July 09, 2024 at 10:58 PM

I responded to one. Spent a great deal of time writing a response. I wanted to read the article whether I was quoted or not. But the person hasn’t answered my messages to ask where it’s to be published.

#general - July 05, 2024 at 09:47 PM

Thanks, Kai. I’ll check it out. I did find something on LinkedIn on communication for introverts that had some helpful points.

#general - July 05, 2024 at 09:46 PM

👍

#general - July 01, 2024 at 12:50 PM

I’m looking for a course to help me communicate better with co-workers and upper management when 1. sharing ideas, 2. questioning down-from-the-top directives, and 3. reviewing others’ work. Oral is good but since I’m a remote worker, I need help with written communication as well. Anyone know of something on LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, and the like?

#general - June 19, 2024 at 12:23 PM

Julie, are you familiar with Ernest (Paul) Chaney on LinkedIn? He’s made discussing AI and its use in marketing his primary focus.

#general - June 12, 2024 at 01:51 AM

I told a coworker (who wrote my outline) just today that I wasn’t including a “fact” in an article because I couldn’t find the source. And she literally said to me, “I couldn’t either. But so many people said it I thought we should include it.”

#general - June 07, 2024 at 11:50 AM

When I was a freelancer, about 80% of my business came from inbound leads through LinkedIn. I only posted once a week, though, but tried to remain consistent. It’s the connections that matter, as @nsisong (Cici) said. And, I purposefully commented on the company posts of those I wanted as clients.
