Hi all! I'm in Denver, on the south side of Sloan's Lake... and am always down for IRL meetups 🙂 If anyone wants to cowork at a coffee shop/brewery, hit up happy hour, or something else, let's make it happen!

@Theresa H Love your site, you did an amazing job on it! Thank you so much for sharing.
@Mary Tindall Thank you so much, that program looks super helpful! I'll pass your information along as well 🙂

Hi everyone! I'm helping a friend explore freelance writing as a potential career move. She's a nurse, health coach, and all-around holistic health expert. I'm working on a guide/roadmap for her and would love to include some examples of websites and portfolios relevant to her niche -- does anyone have any examples I could include, whether your own or someone else's? Thanks a bunch!

Chiming in to share a contrary opinion: An in-house recruiter recently told me that he prefers longer resumes (2-3 pages), especially if a candidate has 10+ years of relevant experience.
Maybe it’s just this person’s unique preference and not a widely shared belief. When it comes to job hunting I don’t know what to think anymore 🫠

Go for it @Dominic Kent! Feel free to DM me if you need any clarification or extra context.

I'm definitely going to look into this! A 7-10ish day horseback riding excursion in Namibia is currently at the top of my list for adventures next year, might as well tack on some time in SA 😉

Oooh I love that. One of my 2024 goals is to take a no laptop trip somewhere. It'd be good for me lol. Which game reserve did you volunteer at?
#freelance-talk - October 10, 2023 at 12:35 PM
I've brought my laptop with me everywhere since 2012 when I started freelancing. I honestly can't remember the last time I left it behind. Some things are just easier to do on a laptop, regardless of work. I also tend to work an erratic schedule. An hour or two here and there, a random week off if I don't have any looming deadlines. Even if I'm technically on holiday I might still whip my computer out to respond to clients or knock out some quick edits. I use a Macbook Air, so it's pretty light and easy to haul around.

I also feel no guilt whatsoever 😆 Some weeks, I barely work. My lifestyle is a bit unconventional and I've purposefully designed it to prioritize flexibility, experiences, and the occasional work sabbatical. I wouldn't turn down the right 9-5 job in the future; I do quite enjoy employer-sponsored health insurance and a stable schedule has its perks. But, I don't need to work 9-5 to meet my current and future financial goals, so I don't.

There are some great suggestions here. If you want something super simple, I recently spun up a really quick site using Google Sites. My domains are with Google, so it was extra easy. My other site is on Wix and I hired a designer, I can maintain it now on my own but I don't love the cost.

100% agree with what @Nicole Mitich said about subject matter expertise. My last in-house role was with a data company. It took me a few months of full-time immersion in the data world to feel confident writing in that space, and even then I still relied on my SMEs to fact check and make sure I was capturing the nuances of data-related topics correctly. I had a hell of a time finding freelancers who could write with authority, even for relatively simple TOFU blogs.
If your readers are subject matter experts, especially in a technical field, they're gonna be more discerning. Even with my limited data background, I can totally see the difference between content from an org like Select Star vs some other data orgs who very obviously use generic freelancers.
Niching down doesn't necessarily mean you need to pick one single industry, or that you need to have a degree/career experience in a specific industry. I have a few niches I like to work in, so I follow thought leaders, read relevant publications, attend events when possible, and generally try to stay up to date on the latest. It helps a ton. And sometimes, I just have to be honest with myself that even though I'm a solid interviewer and researcher, there are some niches that are better served by someone who's fully immersed in the day to day.

I was going to suggest Mio since I have them on my list to pitch for guest posts on behalf of one of my clients, but, well.... 😉
I'll let you know if I come across any sites that fit the bill, though! I need to do some more research for opportunities in the Microsoft arena.

Everyone should definitely follow Isabel on LinkedIn, she posts some fantastic stuff! Personal branding scares/intimidates/frustrates me to no end, but her content does not make me feel those things 🙃

Ooh love this, I'll definitely join when I can.
Btw also love Hightouch's content @Craig Dennis! It really helped me get up to speed on reverse ETL and other data topics for my last role.
#recession-club - July 17, 2023 at 11:32 PM
I just signed up for Otta the other day and am also loving it! The jobs so far seem to be high quality too
#recession-club - July 06, 2023 at 07:20 PM
Ugh, I'm so sorry you're going through this. My partner and I were talking about the whole "our incomes SHOULD be enough to cover basics, yet they don't" thing this morning. I'm tired of hustling and worrying.
I wish I had something more positive to say ❤️ It's so hard to enjoy time off when you know the problem will still be there when you get back, even when we logically know that taking a break is needed. Fun 'lil Catch-22 there.
#recession-club - July 01, 2023 at 12:18 AM
Love this @Jessica McKeil! I'm going to focus on updating my website and portfolio stuff too. I want to add some case studies for my clients too, though I'm kicking myself for not being more diligent about grabbing data/asking about results.
It's also really nice to see apply to "at least 1 job" -- I feel like I read about so many people applying to dozens of jobs a week and it's really demoralizing. Sending a single high-quality application is a big task, IMO (or maybe I need to stop trying so hard because I can't even get interviews right now so perhaps it doesn't make a difference anyway... ugghh I'm so tired of this process.)
Anyhoo, I love this brain dump idea. Happy to share my own and be an accountabila-buddy!

I subscribe to Trendera's newsletter for a weekly tldr, lots of gen z-related stuff on there:

I'm not 100% sure of my July travel schedule yet, but I'll try to make whatever date works for everyone else!
For Boulder spots that are good for groups, there's Rayback Collective (same founders as Improper City so similar-ish vibes). I've heard good things about Rosetta Hall but haven't been there, same with Avanti. Dushanbe Teahouse is also super duper cool and unique, it's a beautiful space with
.So many Boulder options! Anyone else has any other ideas?
#local-colorado - June 16, 2023 at 10:19 PM
I just parked, be there in a jiffy (wearing a black rain coat)
#local-colorado - June 16, 2023 at 08:27 PM
Excited to see everyone in a bit! I don't think we need reservations, but hopefully those won't be famous last words.
#local-colorado - June 12, 2023 at 08:38 PM
Love this plan! How about 4pm? I can do earlier too!
#local-colorado - June 10, 2023 at 05:05 AM
I’m not very up-to-date on the latest and greatest, but Improper City is my usual go-to for group things in Denver since it’s got so much space and good food/drink variety. We could also aim for Lafayette/Louisville so Boulder and Berthoud folks don’t have to trek so far! I don’t know as much about options there, but Acreage is a neat spot in Lafayette for cider, snacks, and lovely views.
#local-colorado - June 08, 2023 at 06:09 PM
I have availability next week on Monday, Thursday, and Friday if anyone wants to meet up? Happy to meet in Denver, Boulder, or wherever's easiest!
#local-colorado - June 02, 2023 at 07:01 PM
I'd love to join a meetup and/or grab coffee too! I'm doing a lot of traveling over the next few months, but I'll be in Colorado June 12-23 if anyone wants to plan something during that timeframe 😊

Hi @Jenny Dupuis... from a fellow midwesterner (Michigan) turned AZ resident! I moved to Phoenix in January, definitely dying with the heat already haha. I've been freelance/a content team of 1 for most of my career, so I totally feel you on the loneliness. I live downtown, about a 15 minute walk from Greenwood Brewing -- let me know if you ever want to grab a pint and talk shop! I could chat about content strategy all day long... but very few people I know feel similarly 😆

Hello everyone! Any B2B SaaS landing page experts in here, preferably in the data analytics/business intelligence space? My company is launching the first version of its product in early August and we’re working on a new landing page. Currently trying to decide whether I’ll write it or if we’ll outsource. This is a super duper important asset, so I’m ideally looking for someone with lots of experience who has data to demonstrate the efficacy their landing page copy (conversion rates, # of leads/sales, ROI, etc.)
If you’re interested, or know anyone else who might be a good fit, please reach out to me directly 🙂
