2024 has truly been the year of AI. However, Iβve also seen marketers fumble through dozens of tools and free prompts, trying to figure out the actual use cases of AI. IMO, AI is just being used as a way to lean harder into the bad habits we've built over the years.
I wrote a newsletter issue last week diving into what the actual problem is and how we at least start to solve it:
#promo - October 17, 2024 at 02:37 PM
I recently had the pleasure of talking to Amanda Cross, Content Research and Insights Manager at Nectar! She has been leading Nectar's survey-led content program since 2022βso I was curious to learn more about why she chose this strategy and how she did it.
Hereβs a sneak peek into what we covered:
β How she used original research to improve awareness and support customers.
β How she used customer conversations and internal data to brainstorm survey topics.
β Tips for implementing this strategy in your business
Subscribe here before 11 AM EST tomorrow to get the issue:

Hey, folks! I just published the first issue of my newsletter. In this edition, Iβve discussed the:
β Three elements to look at before building your strategy
β The one thing SaaS businesses should consider while building the strategy
β A mini breakdown of how Databox created a winning content strategy (that led to more than $8M in ARR)
You can find the issue here:

Hey, y'all! I finally launched my newsletter, "The Content Loop." If you're a B2B SaaS marketer who wants to learn more about content strategy, original research, and product-led content, this is for you.
I'd appreciate a boost on this
for the algo gods. Thank you!#content-collab - August 08, 2024 at 06:30 AM
I've created email templates and just copy pasted them to inform those I've featured. You could also just send it as a campaign instead? Similar to cold emails.
Mailtrack has a relatively inexpensive option to send campaigns. I collect responses via Google Forms (which go to a sheet), so it can pull the name/email from that if it's formatted correctly. It's lesser manual work than doing it individually. Maybe that should help?

I like Air and Paramark's blog. It's not all about traffic and most of those pieces could be used in other ways.

Thanks, @Indrajeet Deshpande! I have an account so I'll see what the conversion + fee comes up to π
#freelance-talk - June 08, 2024 at 08:05 AM
@Erik Dietrich, 100% agree with you! That's a great point as well, which is why I'd like to stick to the card option even though it's coming up to 5%. It's so much easier for my point of contact to pay, as they've mentioned it before.
I might have the option to connect a US bank a/c to Stripe instead but I'm still checking if it's a compliant option. If not, I'll just claim it as a deduction. Thank you!
#freelance-talk - June 07, 2024 at 04:29 PM
@Eric Doty (Superpath) Yes, yes. I do have an account, but for some reason, they've recently limited card payments on business accounts, so I can only rely on wire transfers for now. I'll just have to stick to wire transfer or accept the fee as a cost of doing business now π
#freelance-talk - June 07, 2024 at 10:05 AM
@Shreelekha Singh I've been doing that, too, but payment cycles slow down significantly because of wire transfers. Some companies stretch the Net15/30 terms so I went back to using cards since it helps with cash flow. Have you noticed the same?
Also, Skydo offers a flat fee with a US bank account so that's a good option to consider!
#freelance-talk - June 07, 2024 at 10:03 AM
@Brinda Gulati That's great! I generally hesitate to pass of fees to the client since it's a cost of doing business. But I get what you mean.
#freelance-talk - June 07, 2024 at 10:02 AM
@Takshi - LinkedIn Branding and Social Content Marketing Manager PayPal takes a chunk out of every invoice and with high amounts, it's basically not feasible. I've used Wise but they've limited their card options recently. I use Stripe now but I totally get it. Most options are not feasible because of the RBI regulations as well.
#freelance-talk - June 07, 2024 at 09:03 AM
Indian freelance friends: How are you accepting payments from international clients (specifically the USA)? I'd prefer to send payment links that allow clients to pay using credit/debit cards, but the fees on most platforms are abysmal.
Are y'all just taking it as a cost of doing business, or are there ways to cut down the fees? Any help appreciated π
#general - June 03, 2024 at 11:16 AM
@Katie McDonald When I moved from writing to strategy, I focused on learning more about how to build a strategy, how content fits into the larger org goals, and managing the production side of things. I already had experience managing contractors and the content pipeline in a previous role but again, applying that in the current context matters. Some clients just need the strategy support, while some want you to build/run the programβso in that case your content/editorial experience would come in handy.
If you're looking to go client side, the same skills apply, honestly. Only difference is you'll handle the project yourself vs. doing it through the agency. I'd recommend improving your communication/project management skills and creating workflows in that case. Also, are you looking to stay in SEO or you're looking at content as whole? And you planning to freelance or go for a FT job? The answer varies depending on that π

@Haris Spahic, the first time an inbound lead reached out for a similar project, I used my rates for blog posts as a baseline and went from there.
I factored in:
β’ The length of the report
β’ The amount of information the client provided
β’ If I needed to conduct interviews or collect quotes
β’ Number of feedback cycles (always prepare for more, especially if it's too technical)
β’ Any additional assets they needed (blog post, social copy)
β’ Project timeline (if they need it faster, add a rush fee)
So, anywhere between $.60 to $1 per word just for writing the report + any additional asset. I proposed a flat fee, and it worked out. You can go higher if your rates are on the higher end. It's up to you. Hope this helps!
#content-collab - February 22, 2024 at 07:47 AM
It can be an example for any product or service, @Brenan Quirante. And I don't think the internal team is looking for any collaborations at the moment apart from quote/interview contributions. Thanks!

I've been in a similar position before and just challenged the brief.
Like Dom said, I wasn't in the position to let them go, so I was upfront about the problem and the client was receptive. Turns out, it was just one or two members of the agency's team who were slightly inexperienced. So, it was a quality control issue.
I explained why sections in the brief didn't make sense and what I'd like to include/exclude. Alternatively, I'd cross-question a few things, and they'd remove it later. I've been writing for them for over a year, so now I just take it with a grain of salt and rely on my own instincts π
#general - January 31, 2024 at 03:20 PM
It's perfectly normal to reach out to strangers. I usually tell them the benefit of doing it + time commitment. It's not a super high conversion rate but it does work.
Also, you can access a broader pool of people through PR platforms like HAB2BW.

Hey, everyone! Any in-house SEO experts in the house? I'm writing an article on "Optimizing for E-E-A-T in 2024," and I'd love to include some of your opinions on the topic.
This is for Fiverr Pro β sponsored content to be published on SEJ (DR: 91). Attribution: We'll include your name & designation but no links. Please DM me if that interests you π
#content-collab - January 26, 2024 at 01:11 PM
@Evelina Of course. And yes, it does feel that way, but the reality's quite different. For example, one of my quotes got published within two weeks but an article I wrote in November will only be published in mid-February π
#content-collab - January 26, 2024 at 12:19 PM
@Evelina, just like Amna and Alexander, I will email a source once the piece goes live. But there is a chance that certain pieces don't get published simply because the editorial team decided to nix the topic for that quarter/year.
Also, a piece might be live, but there's a chance I won't let the SME know immediately. If I'm waiting for the editorial team to make a few changes (like corrections to the quote/attribution), I'll wait. In my experience, it takes 4 to 12 weeks to see if a quote has been selected.
From the source perspective, I've had a high success rate for the few I've done. It's because I had established relationships with the writer + relevant inputs. Even I'm slowly scaling this process so that number could reduce drastically.
#content-collab - January 19, 2024 at 03:15 PM
Hey, everyone! Are there any SaaS marketers in here who work for AI-native companies?
I'm launching a strategy service and need your input. Can you spare 5 minutes to complete a quick, anonymous survey? Please DM me if this interests you. Thank you π
P.S. You don't need to offer your email. But I'm happy to offer a free audit/brainstorming session as a thank you for your time.

@Joanna Kaminska Yes. So, I factor in how long it takes, the scope of work involved, types of deliverables, level of involvement, industry, client's budget, etc. For example, the cost of building a topic cluster (research + briefs) will differ from a research report campaign that I set up & write from scratch. Feel free to DM me if something's unclear!
#freelance-talk - October 18, 2023 at 06:20 AM
Thanks, @Noelina Rissman! @Joanna Kaminska, I don't bill by the hour either, so even if it's just strategy or strategy + writing, there's a fixed price. For strategy, there are three tiers like how Rachel offers. If the client wants to add writing to that, I scope out how many pieces they need per month, offer a fixed price and combine that with the final project rate.

Thanks, @Noelina Rissman! @Elsier, I find it hard, too, to source quotes in the medical/health field. So I've tried HARO, and it worked, but I got better quality quotes from Qwoted. Have you tried
and ?Additionally, you can do the following if you haven't already:
β’ Maintain a list of PR folks who cater to the medical industry and ask them if they have clients willing to contribute (they usually have a list they're willing to provide).
β’ Look at major publications like Harvard Medicine, Mayo Clinic, etc., to find SMEs with relevant expertise.
β’ Use LinkedIn or Sales Navigator to find folks with relevant credentials.
β’ Connect with your client; they might have a partner network/past contributors to feature.
I've tried these approaches in the past, and they worked. But it does require more time and effort, so if you have longer deadlines, go for it!
