@Michael Thomas Amber is right on the 4 types of research - although focus groups will have a higher CPL than the other types.
As for cost - it will differ between in-house cost and outsourcing. When I was inhouse at Office Otter, we had a small budget for doing the whole process ourselves. I'm happy to share that.
Now, I work as a consultant offering different packages on research. Also happy to share my pricing for this.

These are some freemium and opensource tools that you can A/B test with:
Nelio (WP sites only)
Vanity
Mojito
Sixpack
Split
Growthbook
Unleash
Flagsmith
PS: Not affiliated with any of them

@Stefan Momcilovic Let me know if you want to dig into A/B testing tools, I can point you towards paid & open source A/B testing tools. I've been in this industry for 4 years now
#general - December 13, 2023 at 01:18 PM
You might be looking for an A/B testing tool - most of them have personalisation engines built in as well as customer segmentation.
You can personalise pages to show different things to different customer segments (returning vs new) and so forth. You can also segment your audience within the testing tool itself.
This is outside of the core A/B testing functionality most of these tools have. But the same principles apply.

@Aanchal Parmar Look at your partners' audience, do they fit the profile of those you want to survey? If yes, ask those specific partners if they would like to partner with your company on original research. With their assent, create unique links for each of those partners so you can track how many respondents they bring in.
For finding community spaces, I'd say lean on Sparktoro. Use it to find communities and newsletters for e-commerce marketers. Then ask those communities/newsletters if you can partner with them for your survey. If partnership is out of the question, consider sponsoring posts/newsletter in those places to get your respondents.
The key is to be very targeted in your approach. Also, look at LinkedIn and Facebook groups for e-commerce marketing communities. Use the same partnership/sponsorship approach.

Aanchal, does your company have any partners in the ecommerce space?

🚩 I experienced this during an interview process in 2019. They already had an intensive application process that had 7 long and thought out answers. They wanted a long assignment before they even interviewed me. It would have taken me 8 hours of work to complete. Luckily, I removed myself from the process and told them that.

@Parthi Loganathan People are already creating a strategy for threads? Already? How are we sure that threads isn't a passing fad?
It's not even available in the EU

Kendrick Lamar has amazing eyes. Although I think there was a missed opportunity for their name to be Kendrick Lameow which is super hilarious 😍
#freelance-gigs - July 20, 2023 at 03:11 PM
Seconding @Jillian Wood You should price it similarly to white paper + a bit more depending on what is required of you. I'm working on a research report writing course and have a section for pricing for freelancers. Some companies will give you the exact data you need to write the report, others will give you data that you may need to analyse to get exact data stories for the report, others may want you to do this and also write their semi-gated page. So, in essence, it depends.
I'd price it a bit more than a white paper if you're getting exact data stories to write without doing any analysis. You can add on more money for analysis, extra writing and stuff.

I can ask my original research network about panel companies if you need a recommendation as most of my experience has focused on using my own audience for research.
#general - July 07, 2023 at 02:14 PM
If you want to do more than one original research a year, you can do a combination of using publicly available data and surveys. This can save you money. If budget isn't a concern, you can do more survey based research and use a panel company to recruit respondents as that can make the process faster.
For survey based research, you can recruit respondents depending on who you want to survey.
• If it's executives, survey panel companies are a lot easier for this type of audience as they qualify everyone and you can be sure there will be low spam.
• If respondents are your own audience, you can recruit via your own channels, partnering with influencers/experts in your industry. This is what I did at Office Otter where I was CMM - we used our audience + our partner's audiences to get 529 complete responses in 4 weeks. We had an extra 82 incomplete responses when we closed the survey.
If you're surveying your audience, you need to worry about spam. You can reduce this by using a donation to charity approach and promoting the survey exclusively in industry-specific places.

For quantitative data:
• You can use publicly available data, a la Peer Signal. If you search for Peer Signal on LinkedIn, you will see examples of them pulling B2B SaaS landing pages and analysing that to pull insights. Databox did a demo report on how long it takes B2B SaaS companies to respond to demo requests. This method allows you to do as many reports as you want.
• Pull data from your own users/customers, a la Dreamdata. They pulled in-software data and made it into a report. Depending on how you handle this, it may land flat especially if people think you're pushing your own agenda as a company and not advancing the conversation in the industry.
• Survey-based research where you get respondents to answer questions. You can recruit respondents via your own audience, partners or asking a survey company. These companies handle the recruitment of respondents but it can add to the cost of the research as you pay per person. Usually most research uses at least 250 respondent, you can see how quickly that adds up.

cc @Cierra Loflin this is nearly in all the channels.

What do you mean by data studies? Do you mean original research?
If it's original research - there are so many ways to get data and I'm happy to share my thoughts with you
#recession-club - July 03, 2023 at 03:01 PM
Yes, Sarah has a webinar on YT about getting clients. I can send you a direct link to it.
Eddie's course is on how to create landing pages that convert. I'd absolutely recommend it. I'm currently doing my first walk through and hoping to use what I learn to create a landing page for the course that will drive conversions from all the efforts at promotion I'm putting in.

If 10 cents will keep the lights on, do it. When things pick up, you can phase out those clients.
I hope things get better 🫂

I got laid off in May from my CMM job, just after I had launched a research report from scratch and all under $4k.
I still have a freelance client (although their CMM was laid off and their PMM is my contact person). I've leaned heavily into:
• Creating a research report writing course amid the AI panic (20 people on the waitlist)
• Updated my resume
• Updated my LinkedIn profile (about me, job experience & others)
• Thinking about updating my Portfolio to include recent work
• Posting more about my experience in original research and CMM
• Learning (taking Eddie Shleyner's course + Sarah BBWI resources on YT)
I'm still putting one foot in front of the other. I think once the course is launched, I can pivot on getting more clients.

For the whole project, I outline the scope and I list out the prices of each item and total it. I try to be clear about what's in the project and I also add a if things exceed the scope and what that will cost. But I don't add it to the total. But it makes sense to be clear about extras so that the client isn't blindsided when they receive a future invoice for the extras.
