You should explore managed marketplaces - there are many out there for writers, developers, product managers, etc. They keep you in their database and usually don't take commissions - so you get what you ask for - they charge additionally to their clients for the recruiting and project maangement work.

I would say it’s better to choose a theme which is an intersection of your education, work experience and interests. For me, I’m an engineer, built many digital products using nocode tools, and love the no-code indiemaker community. So I chose this no-code and process automation as my niche. If you’re already feeling fishy at this moment, chances are you won’t enjoy the work later on. Also it seems they don’t have processes set to hire. You’ve already worked, submit it and see what happens. If it’s more work after this, then you can ask for payment from there on. Don’t think they will pay for the current work as it wasn’t mentioned before.
