I'm in Indianapolis! I doubt we have enough here for a channel, but would agree about grouping IN/KY/OH to get a few smaller markets together.

Hello, are there any writers available with B2B ecommerce experience (esp. Shopify)? A friend is looking for someone to create and manage a newsletter, a product update, and some blog content each month. They are a tiny company, so looking for someone willing to be a little more hands-on with strategy, analytics, and building things out in their CMS and email platform. If so, please drop me a DM with your portfolio by 12/30.

I have run into this too. My best way to weed these out has been to be super specific in the request about who I want to respond (Eg. "Please only respond if you have personal experience with [topic].") I've been known to send a follow-up question too and the people who answer are generally those not using AI. But yes, I do wish these platforms had an AI detector built in.

I work with Amy Northard, "The Accountant for Creatives" and love to recommend her team! https://amynorthardcpa.com/. I'd contact her before end of year since she locks in for no new clients during tax season.

I used one for awhile. It was $110/mo and had good space and multiple locations around town. I just used it 3-4 times a month, so I struggled with whether it was worth it and am currently taking a break and making the coffee shop circuit. It depends what I'm doing. If I am on a call or need to pull a lot of research up, I like to be home where it's quiet and I have my second monitor.

Dropped you a DM @Mark Rogers!

It's a grey area for sure. Some freelancers charge more for clients who ask for non-competes, since it effectively takes away a chunk of their potential business. I avoid signing them when possible, but I think it's totally fair to ask freelancers to sign an NDA for early access information.

I do a lot of blog and ebook content for B2B SaaS companies. One new client asked me to price out developing an infographic with an accompanying post. Their internal graphic designer would do the design work, but they need someone to do the strategy and writing. What's a good amount to charge for this?

#freelance-talk - June 03, 2024 at 03:22 PM

Hi Brinda! This sounds low to me. I'm assuming you'll need to learn the founders' voices and create distinct content for each, which takes research and time. A newsletter is a big lift too-- could easily be $500-$1,000 on its own. Did you mean 4 posts a week for each account or all 3? Are they also expecting you to monitor and engage on the accounts? Either way, I think you should ask for more.

Yes, please!

Does anyone have a responsive attorney they've used to review contracts? I normally handle these myself but have one that's concerning me and I want it reviewed before signing!

#freelance-talk - March 27, 2024 at 05:49 PM

@Austin Meadows I would definitely pitch a session for your expertise area at a local or regional conference! There's probably much less saturation of marketing content.

#freelance-talk - March 27, 2024 at 02:39 PM

I've asked myself this same question. If you are using it solely for professional development, I would do a virtual pass instead. Last year, I opted to skip national conferences and instead registered for a smaller local conference in my industry for $200. It was a good mix of networking and professional development and I'm going back this year. Another way to significantly save costs and get some exposure is to submit a talk as a speaker! Your registration is usually comped then.

How I have dealt with this is taking my roles over 10 years old and listing only the job title, company, and dates. So, I'm not leaving a gap, but I'm not giving any detail about those old roles in order to keep it to two pages.

Hi Ashling, I'll send you an email later today! I'm a freelance writer and content strategist with small business newsletter experience.

DM'd you about this. Thanks!

Hello and Happy Friday! I'm doing some research on podcasting, particularly content repurposing and distribution. If you host a podcast or your company does, I would love your input with a 5-minute (or less) survey. Because I know everyone's time is valuable, I'll send you a $5 coffee gift card (US/Can only) for participating or make a $5 donation to World Central Kitchen on your behalf. Thanks in advance! https://forms.gle/7wuMVQ5uHiUY6DdM8

Not sure if she's in this group, but you should check out Melissa, the CPA who writes (https://acpawrites.com/).

I use the Full Screenshot tool in Chrome (it's hidden under Settings > Developer Tools) to capture a full-length webpage image. Curious to learn a PDF method as well!

I haven't used it personally, but have heard good reviews about MailerLite for this purpose.

I'm curious where the name Harlow came from! Can you share?

#freelance-gigs - December 13, 2021 at 03:03 PM

I have probably spent upwards of 20% of my time on internal (ie. nonbillable) projects this year. However, it's been a rebuilding year for me, so the majority of that has been on tasks like pitching and redoing my portfolio website. I expect that to scale down in the next year or two as I have more of a client base. My time on invoicing, organization, etc. is less than 5%.

Copyhackers has a very useful tool for this: https://copyhackers.com/freelance-copywriter-quote-calculator/

#freelance-gigs - November 29, 2021 at 07:07 PM

Hi Indrajeet, I currently use FreshBooks for my time tracking and invoicing and it is fantastic. The one big value-add they are missing is project management. I've been toying with some different systems for project management and currently like ClickUp. It has a LOT more features and views than Trello and is free. I am still pretty disorganized with my internal notes, so could use a better system for that!

#freelance-gigs - November 01, 2021 at 01:34 PM

I was a beta user on LinkedIn's new services pages. I got a few messages and RFPs through, but found them largely to be spam (including one person who attempted to defraud me with a deposit check that bounced, asking for a partial refund). Now that the program's live, does anyone have similar or different experience to share? I want it to work because it's low investment to set up as a LinkedIn user, but... sigh.

#freelance-gigs - October 06, 2021 at 07:12 PM

Hi @Will Waggoner! I built my first-ever email newsletter on Campaign Monitor back in 2010 and have been a big fan ever since. This sounds like it would be a good fit. I'll be sending in an application soon!

Turn off Slack, close my Google browser, anything with notifications. I also find that Word's full-page view is helpful to eliminate visual distractions.
