does anyone have issues w/ this specific community not clearing notifications? its so weird, it doesn’t happen in my other slack communities. but every time theres an announcement it wont clear the “1” notification even when i view the message in the chennel AND in the activity tab. its driving me crazy lol

this and pointing and saying “ooh, cow!” are the only acceptable greeting methods

“What are we gonna do tonight, Brain?” “The same thing we do every night, try to take over the world!”

#freelance-gigs - September 20, 2022 at 03:11 PM

Oh - another habit was, as soon as a problem or potential problem came up with a client, i’d immediately add language about it into my contract (for future projects). Over time, this resulted in a contract that did a really good job at protecting me

#freelance-gigs - September 20, 2022 at 03:10 PM

Along those lines, working with a buddy (we’d often go to the coffee shop together). Having someone working alongside you helps you stay on task.

(My tips may be more “good habits for ADHD freelancers” lol)

#freelance-gigs - September 20, 2022 at 03:09 PM

Not a freelancer anymore, but when I really needed to get things done I’d go to the coffee shop. Spent many mornings there banging stuff out. The change of scenery really helped me focus and my mind/body understood that the coffee shop was a place to work

#general - September 19, 2022 at 02:55 PM

What I’m saying is you don’t need 8-10 interviews to understand that. If you really need the candidate to meet so many people, do a group interview or two.

#general - September 19, 2022 at 02:53 PM

Ultimately it’s really disrespectful of candidates’ time. They don’t consider that sure maybe it’s 8-10 interviews — but the person is interviewing multiple places and say, they do that for 5 companies - that’s 40-50 interviews! For 5 companies!

#general - September 19, 2022 at 02:52 PM

That still seems wildly excessive to me. Was not a fan of how the tech industry pushes so many interviews when I worked in it, and I’m disappointed that it seems to be spreading. That’s just ineffective interviewing, if you need more than 8 interviews to understand if someone is a good fit.

#general - September 19, 2022 at 02:16 PM

8-12 interviews per role is really intense. Is this for tech companies?

Sorry I am SUPER late on this (catching up on this slack), but for value props, you want to look into the Jobs to be Done framework

Thanks!

A lot of our clients need our marketing help with recruiting, so much so that I just planned to create an article for our blog around this. What are the first steps a SMB should take to market their job openings? Particularly companies that are recruiting for non-office jobs? Do you have any best practices you stick to, that are maybe unique to recruiting marketing (aka arent just marketing best practices)?

#local-philly - June 03, 2022 at 04:37 PM

have fun all, i’ll see you at the next one

<#CN9UCQ92A|> is a good place to ask!

#freelance-gigs - May 24, 2022 at 01:24 PM

That helps us divide the audience into distinct groups, and from there we work on developing personas based around trigger points, seeking/finding methods, priorities and important features, and so on

#freelance-gigs - May 24, 2022 at 01:23 PM

We start with the jobs to be done framework. Looking at it from the perspective of “what problem is the customer buying your product/service to solve” is very helpful and sidesteps the useless direction personas can go in

Starting to get along…

Thanks Dylan!

#freelance-gigs - May 18, 2022 at 05:34 PM

That could work, could you send me an email with a couple samples (ideally nonprofit adjacent, but not necessary) and your rates? And maybe a bit of details about your specific nonprofit experience? woodj@brolik.com|woodj@brolik.com

#freelance-gigs - May 18, 2022 at 04:35 PM

Anyone out there with a background in associations, nonprofits, or association management who’s available as a freelance writer? We need help developing content for a client of ours (an AMC) who serves associations/nonprofits and getting information out of them is extremely difficult, and the compounding factor is it’s hard to find good content out there for researching the articles.

#general - May 04, 2022 at 06:58 PM

My company uses this, our video person loves it https://animoto.com/

#general - May 02, 2022 at 05:32 PM

I do think, separate from market and economic topics, that there will be a reckoning of sorts with content at some point here in the next 5-10 years, as many companies just think they need content but it should really just be a piece of your marketing strategy and whether content is right or not depends on the business, so there could be a slight downward movement as companies who get no value from content move out of it (and the downward trend of search engines will affect this, ever realized how hard it is to find good content via search now, versus 5 years ago?)

#general - May 02, 2022 at 05:30 PM

I have seen a stable, steady growth in content over the past 12 years. From my perspective nothing has really changed in the past few years — content has been booming since like 2012. The only real change in the market was it used to be that marketers knew how important it was and had to convince clients; and now clients tend to know upfront that they need it and ask for it, but that change happened pre-pandemic, maybe like 2016-2018 or something. Content marketing wasn’t really a thing in the last recession, certainly not like we know it today, people were doing it but there was no content marketing industry. I don’t see the demand for content as separate from the demand for marketing — if people tighten their belts and lower their mktg budgets then content will likely go down too depending on strategy, but it’s pretty much tied to marketing now and will not move independently imo

So we have a pretty in-depth onboarding process for every client, and we refer to that as our “consultation phase” and yes we do charge for it, because we put a gazillion hours into determining goals & kpis, competitive analysis, target audience analysis (including interviews), and then prepping the first 3 months of the campaign and presenting that so we can flip switches when they say go. we also often include a brand positioning and messaging deliverable too. So basically, the first 5-6 weeks of a relationship is that stuff and it’s a flat fee, then they say go and we turn on the monthly retainer. This is at a regular marketing agency so content is a piece of this but not all of it

(also just some feedback for next year as changing now would probably mess with your results, but there's no option to choose both B2B and B2C - i work at an agency and we have clients of all kinds)

#general - October 06, 2021 at 05:38 PM

My boss (at an agency) asked me for a 3-5 year financial plan when I last asked for a raise. He wants to know basically what i need to stay long term. He said to not just think about cash but also profit sharing/revenue sharing/equity and such. Bc we're an agency, I think equity is out as they won't sell, so it's worthless. But profit sharing or revenue sharing could work. Any thoughts on how to go through this sort of exercise? I'm honestly not sure where to start.

#agency-life - September 17, 2021 at 06:45 PM

We do pretty much everything, though it varies by client -- some clients have deep expertise of a niche area, so they provide the content and we do the keyword research, outline, editing, etc. Clients approve nearly everything that goes out. We're split into two marketing teams, each handling half our clients, and I'm on both teams (as the only content person). I'm thinking having a content marketer on each team would be a good first step, giving them the bulk of execution, freeing me up to do more strategic, big picture thinking, and general management. Beyond that it's hard to say, but I am not sure if I need a solid plan beyond that bc things change with our team structure fairly regularly around here.

Overall I'm just having difficulty organizing my head around how to scale my efforts with minimal help -- I can hire freelancers but we tend to go into periods where we want to limit cost on contractors, so that always throws a wrench into things. And I won't be able to hire anyone for at least 6 months. Ultimately I kinda feel like I'm in a hole as a team of one managing so many clients, where I'm just in short-term execution mode most of the time, and I'm not really sure how to start pulling myself out of the hole to get things on more of a long term schedule.

#agency-life - September 13, 2021 at 03:40 PM

Agency peeps - how is your content team structured? I am a team of one with help from coworkers and freelancers, but my boss has asked me to start thinking longterm about how I will grow the team and formalize our process (from the content itself to when we hire vs contract, what elements of "content" fall under my team, like does email, does ad copy, etc) and I'm a bit at a loss as to where to even start with this. Documenting and formalizing the process of planning and creating content itself is the easy part and I can do that, but with the rest, I am not even sure as to how to start thinking about this

#agency-life - August 06, 2021 at 02:50 PM

We do this at my agency, http://brolik.com. Specifically, I do this at my agency. Just presented two brand messaging frameworks this week, and we also do visual branding. Typically our persona development/TA analysis is separate, just as a general part of our onboarding new marketing clients, as we do the brand and messaging for our clients, but could adjust our process

Any freelance writers experienced w/ B2B/digital marketing up for a blog post project? It's an in-depth post, at least 1000 words, probably more. If it goes well there is an opportunity for future work, both from us (agency) and our clients. We have a lot of work coming down the pipe and I can't do it all myself! DM me if you're interested with your portfolio and rates 🙂
