What do you do when the scope of a project seems to not fit into your timeline?

As in, you realize the tasks will take longer than you thought and more is involved.

So far, with this project I have a retainer set up - 2 payments over a month. But it seems they will need me past that time.

I'd let them know that now that you've dived and have some boots on the ground, you can see that the scope is larger than anticipated. Based on what you're seeing, instead of [one month], you think this will take [X months].

Sometimes I like to offer the choice of yeses. Something like

We can either
• Switch to an X month retainer now [link/contract/admin details]
• Or finish out the current 1 month project, pause at that point, and check in on the next steps (e.g., stopping work at that point, upgrading to an additional X months)

@Kai Davis Love the “choice of yeses”. Works with my toddler, works with my clients 😛
