How do you stay motivated when there's no work anywhere?

Hi, Matt.

First, let me give you kudos for reaching out. It’s not always easy to ask for help.

Now, to your question. To me, your question has two parts: 1. the question about staying motivated, and 2. the assertion that there is no work anywhere. I will address the latter first.

I would argue that there IS work, but I would agree that there’s definitely less of it, which means that there’s more competition for it. Personally, it took me six months to get another gig after I got laid off, and I know other writers who still haven’t found work.

That brings us to your question about staying motivated. Given the market, I can understand why you might feel demotivated. I’ve been there.

The thing is, motivation is temporary. It will only get you so far.

My suggestion would be to build habits instead. For me, that meant applying to at least one job and pitching for one freelance gig per day.

Avoid burnout. Take breaks and rest.

Create a life outside of work. And yes, looking for work is work.

Finally, seek help (like you did here). Connect with friends and family and tell them what you’re going through. You don’t have to go it alone.

I hope this helps, Matt. Take care. And remember, you don’t have to do this alone.

@Mark Burdon I've been a freelance writer for 12 years. I have a portfolio on my own website, I've written loads of articles about things I care about on LinkedIn and my blog and my substack. I follow loads of creators, I've probably spent about $1500 on courses and God-only-knows how many free webinars. I'm in many Slack communities -- including one devoted to climate marketing -- and LinkedIn groups. I sent five LOIs a day for months -- over 400. Agencies don't respond to me any more than businesses do. I haven't had occasional work in months and I haven't had regular work in a year. I really don't think this is about my mindset. Also, I do get outside a lot. I go for a lot of walks. I just spent four days in New Hampshire with friends, not thinking about jobs at all. I know you mean well, but you don't know anything about me or my experience.
