I would like to update my headshots this spring. (My current profile photo on my website and LinkedIn - used here too - is about three years old, and my face looks different now due to changes in weight.) Freelancers, what do you think is better - a more professional photo (ie in a studio, wearing business casual, etc), or something more simple and approachable?

I like something professional in a studio. And your choice of outfit can make you look approachable too while being professional.

Also, studio vs outdoors??

i went all in on my personality and it’s the first thing pople talk about before they hire me. they love how approachable the photo is and are happy when i am the same way. i typically use the one i have here with me eating a doughnut!

One of my colleagues just got really awesome headshots done! The photographer took her to a few outdoor locations of her choice (with a couple wardrobe changes) and was able to strike that balance between professional + personable. I’m tempted to hire the same photographer 😅 (I’m in a mid-size city in the US, but I’m sure you can find someone like this anywhere.)

I did a studio session for my last round but I really emphasized with my photographer that I wanted something that showed personality since I work in a more creative field. I think it really comes down to the photographer but I think you can achieve what you want in a studio

I'd do a session with a photographer and get a mix of both. I had someone locally do mine and it was around $200 plus the cost of hair and makeup and I have gotten a ton of milage out of it
