Hi friends! Looking for advice. How do you craft your portfolio? Do you collect all bylines or just pertinent ones that really show your value/niche? If you ghost write how have you noted this?

Hi @Georgette, I just recently made my own website https://makoyoung.com and went through this problem. I've been around the block, from watching webinars, and looking at the most generalist of writers to the most niched (@Dominic Kent he also has freelance coaching you can avail 😉)

I found out that it really just depends on what you want to do with your career. If you want to niche down, then strategically pick clients that are relevant to your niche (I've written for over 20+ websites and only have 4-5 as my main portfolio). I generally don't publish my ghostwriting because of my contracts when I worked with that client.

It's very important that if you do end up going a more generalist route, e.g. lots of niches, that you find a way to segregate them on your website so your profile doesn't look cluttered.

Recruiters and potential clients cycle through 20+ writers, sometimes even 50 to 80+ depending on where you're applying, and the slightest bit of friction will often result in them not looking through your profile at all. I've been a recruiter myself as a content manager and that's my personal experience. It's not like I would lose out on quality anyway, since there were lots of writers that were just as suited to the job description

authory has a way to create collections so you can house all your work in one place, but also create collections to send as part of applications

Thank you for sharing your own site @Mako Young and your perspective as a recruiter as well! Yeah, I really do need to update and make mine more clear. This is super helpful! You da bomb dot com.

@Georgette Hey girl, I'm a ghostwriter and I recently updated my portfolio and faced this same issue. Usually we're not allowed to showcase the work that we've done as ghostwriters, but I asked for permission from previous employers and gave a disclaimer before the article that it's a previously ghostwritten article.

Other than that, I wrote a few new articles and pieces just for the portfolio that are not published anywhere.

P.S. I made my portfolio on notion and got a professional looking link for it from super site

@Debs thank you for sharing that insight! I had my original portfolio on Notion too and was wondering how I should set it up easier for people.

Also, because I was waffling about what to do with the ghost posts, I reached out to my ghostwriter editor to get a testimonial. not sure if you're still ghostwriting but thought that was good to have on hand in case someone asked when I sent over a url.

testimonials and client galleries are a good addition truly. Definitely still ghostwriting haha. Is your testimonial dilemma sorted btw? @Georgette

Hey @Debs Oh yes! They were really supportive thank goodness. I might work that in. I feel like my portfolio is a little all over the place rn but I do feel better using this right now:

Thank you @Debs! A friend who's obsessed with Notion said to google portfolio templates so I pulled one of those. I still need to hammer out more of the writing part and pull more clips.
