Hey all! I'm looking to hear from freelance content strategists (in other words, not looking for freelance writing rates) for answers on this question—do you charge by the hour or by the project (ex: content audit = $5k)? and if you charge by project/flat fee, do those rates fluctuate based on company size/maturity/etc. or are they truly flat?

Anthony Sills March 03, 2023 at 05:27 PM

Hey @Jenna Thomas I charge a flat project rate. It's doesn't depend on company size.

Julia Pizzolato March 03, 2023 at 05:30 PM

Mainly by the project. It really depends on what it is. Sometimes I'll charge by the hour for smaller things.

Rachel March 03, 2023 at 05:35 PM

I charge by the project for strategy work, and it’s truly flat for me. I do, of course, offer a variety of packages based on what each company needs that vary widely in rate, but I don’t change those rates based on who’s asking.

Jenna Thomas March 03, 2023 at 05:36 PM

this is all super helpful and confirms what I was thinking! thank you!

Jeffrey Trull March 03, 2023 at 05:55 PM

I do both project and hourly, but moving more towards project. My rates don’t explicitly vary by company size, etc., though obviously more work can be involved for website with more pages and thus I charge a higher fee based on that.

Hi, Jenna! I charge a flat rate fee, but depending on the extensiveness of the strategy the fee can increase.

projeeeeeeeeeeeeeect alwayssss

Stephen Jeske March 04, 2023 at 08:44 PM

Charge by the hour and you commoditize your time. Charge by the project, then it’s the value you offer.

Melissa Chiou March 06, 2023 at 06:30 PM

Project rate. 50% deposit upfront, 50% on delivery.

Shayna Wills March 06, 2023 at 09:21 PM

For those who charge by the project, what's the scope of it? I've had trouble figuring out project pricing because I could do project strategy for one client for many months

Rachel March 06, 2023 at 09:29 PM

@Shayna Wills typically for me scope gets defined during an intro/discovery call—the client describes what their pain points and goals are, I suggest some things that may solve those + then propose a project with scope clearly outlined. So the project price is based on the scope that we’ve come to together based on the overall goals and resources

Connor Barry March 06, 2023 at 09:32 PM

Hey @Shayna Wills! I definitely scope out the project like @Rachel mentioned. I have a framework for all of my content strategies I put together, but if there's something specific about the content strategy that I know will take longer based on the discovery call, I'll outline that more in the SOW as well.

Shayna Wills March 06, 2023 at 09:35 PM

Thanks! I guess I am more wondering about timeframes. For one of my clients, I'm frequently coming up with blog ideas and that's not something I can put an end date on so I'm just doing an hourly retainer along with blog writing, etc. I could definitely do project pricing for all the content strategy materials but I'm more wondering about ongoing blog ideas, SEO optimization, etc. Do you charge like a monthly or 3-month rate that they can renew?

Connor Barry March 06, 2023 at 09:37 PM

Ah, ok! Yeah, so after the strategy project portion, I set up either a 3 month or 6 month project flat fee for an agreed upon amount of SEO-optimized blogs. That way you can feel good about what money will be coming in for that time period. Hope that helps 🙂

Shayna Wills March 06, 2023 at 09:38 PM

Yes, that's helpful thanks @Connor Barry!

Jenna Thomas March 06, 2023 at 11:12 PM

Thank you all so much—love the passion and detail around your thinking.

Jenna Thomas March 09, 2023 at 04:51 PM

Do you all have a standard project minimum? And if so do you mind sharing what it is?

Dawn Baird March 21, 2023 at 04:40 PM

I charge per project. For example, I've just been asked to do a content audit and gap analysis for a tech company's documentation. It'll be a flat fee. They're m exact audience type (enterprise sized). So, if a smaller co approached me, it's the same amount of work and value, so I'd charge the same. I could reduce the fee and just include less in the audit. But, then smaller cos tend not to be able to afford it at all. So, I only target larger companies.
