"My rates are between $200 and $250 for a 1,000 word article." Prospective client "Currently, we're looking for content within the range of 600 to 800 INR for 1000 words. If you're still interested in working with us within this budget, please let me know." That's $6-8 for 1000 words. That's not even a good rate for a student in India and why the heck would anyone think I would take less than 1/20th of my rates for the type of work? (This is not the first time this has happened, and I store the names in a "I will never work for this person even if they get rich" file).

Yup, those rates are abysmal for most Indian cities.

I will talk to Indian clients, but I'm up front about the fact that I have to charge U.S. rates. Sometimes they can afford me, most of the time they can't, and I don't mind "You're too expensive," it was the fact that they would even think for a second that I would work for that.

That's what I charge for easy proofreading.

Absolutely. It's only fair on your part to charge those rates, else it's difficult to survive tbh.
It's plain stupid on the client's part to think those rates are any good for a freelancer, let alone someone in the US.

I just don't get why somebody thinks they can counter offer 1/10th or 1/20th of a quote on anything.

I mean, has this strategy ever worked for them?

Maybe someone who doesn't know how exchange rates work?

That's..possible.

And then think someone would even consider that offer.

600-800 INR is actually a bit more than $6-8 bucks, but I can't be bothered to do the actual math. It's still insulting.

It's about $8-10, which is a rate most good freelance writers in India would scoff at.

They can't actually afford a writer.

Thanks for providing the information. Out of curiosity, what IS considered a good rate in India right now?

Quite honestly, I might not be the best person to answer that. And it'd also vary based on industry, experience, content type, and how well you position yourself, but any company that expects decent content would at least offer $40-50 (INR 3000-4200)/1000 words.

nodnods Which is still lower than market rate in the U.S. but isn't what I would call terrible. Depending on what the work was and how long it would take me, I might consider that.

Thank you!
