Hi @Samantha Anderl and @Andrea Wildt What kind of offers work the best for new freelance clients? Retainer, all upfront, partial upfront, free test job etc?
We do not recommend offering free work. It sets a bad precedent and you should be paid for what you do! If you, or the client, are a little unsure about working together start with a project - that way you can test the working relationship while still making sure you get paid.
A lot of freelancers require payment (or at least partial payment) upfront. I think this is very common and worth doing, especially if you have any concerns about the client. We always asked for 50% of the first month upfront, that way they client had some skin in the game, and we knew we would have some money in the bank within a reasonable timeframe.
