After using Perplexity and CoPilot, I think generative engine optimization (GEO) might be where the future is headed.

People are sick of Google and they're looking for alternatives. I think the future of SEO might be about optimizing for AI-powered search tools and less about Google. Thoughts?

We'll see but I wouldn't bet the farm on this happening in the short term.

Yes. "SEO is dead" framing has put content marketers into a reactive, defensive stance.

Search will both change drastically and fracture across more distribution points.

It's sitting in front of our eyes.

Google has a crappy user experience. They've gotten away with this for a long time because they're a monopoly. People don't like friction and they will be given better search experiences that allow them to avoid that friction.

@Christopher Morris maybe not short-term, no. Google still has the market share of the search industry. But the transition is already happening. I'd give it maybe a few years, at least.

People also don't give enough credence to the fact that Google is more than a Search Engine, and they are actively participating in these new technologies and user experiences. So, with all of this logic, Trad-Google is falling but what isn't reporting is that it could just as easily give rise to AI-Google?

SEO isn't dying but I think the educational blog post trend is fading out thanks to AI Overview and Zero-Click searches. SEO will still be important for bringing traffic to company and product pages, though. And there will still be people who don't trust AI Overview and want to verify the source of information.
