I’m writing an article for my blog about what to include in a stellar freelance writing portfolio. Freelancers, and people who hire them, what are some do’s and don’ts for a portfolio website? (Will give a backlink or link to your linkedin if I use your quote!)

If you’re more comfortable emailing, hmu at hsing@hsingtseng.com|hsing@hsingtseng.com 🙂

Hi @Hsing Tseng

I’m Prit, a Freelance Content Marketer, SEO Copywriter, & Strategist with 5+ years of experience. I am happy to contribute my expertise to your article!

Here’s my take as a Freelancer:

"Over the years, as a Freelance Content Marketer and SEO Copywriter, I’ve sent out quite a few cold emails, DMs, and job requests. Through this, I’ve had the opportunity to connect directly with several HR professionals, Content Managers, and Heads of Content. In my experience, here’s the one thing they consistently look for in a portfolio: Trust.

Clients want to know you can actually deliver the results they are after. So, if you want to build an outstanding freelance writing portfolio that converts, your main goal should be to build that trust. You can do this by:

  1. Clearly showcasing work in the same niche or industry.
  2. Having a professional-looking website without too much clutter—just listing your top (latest) work samples for each category is enough.
  3. Showing client testimonials and reputed brands for which you've worked in the past.
  4. Most importantly, showing the real impact and results of your work with past clients."

@Hsing Tseng Probably advice that sits lower on the priority rung but important nonetheless:

I kept my website artsy and true to who I, and didn't go for a "traditional and clean" look to match the industry, for example.

In my early days, I got a lot of advice to nix the hard-to-read fonts and artistic illustrations to make my offer clearer. I didn't do ANY of that and three months ago, I got a direct message from a client I wanted to work with THROUGH my website form, saying he thought it was cool.

My two cents here are possibly cheesy and trite, but ring true however: keep what makes you, you. For some, an artsy website may be a block; for others, it's exactly the reason they'd want to work with me.
