Hey @everyone! I come bearing great news (side note: I still have to look up baring vs. bearing if I'm being honest — also, I got it wrong on the first try):

PS. Apparently yesterday was "Community Manager Appreciation Day" and @Jimmy Daly (Superpath) didn't get me anything, so we're in a fight now.

@Eric Doty (Superpath) this made me lol: "While I've heard many people refer to the day this report comes out as things like "Christmas for content marketers," "more exciting than the birth of my child," and "as comforting as a warm hand towel in first class," I personally think that's all a little over the top."

Dozens of people have said those things

And you are forgiven now

and please accept my sincerest apologies for missing Community Manager Appreciation Day

Trying to spell “Bearing” feels like when you try to insert a USB drive the right way

Nothing has ever been so accurate

I found out that I'm underpaid globally from this report by a LOT but do you have location specific average salaries for a Director level role? Or could you share the numbers privately via DM. I'm based in Canada and increasingly U.S. startup jobs justify underpaying remote Canadians based on the fact that I'm based here. It would be super helpful to have alternative data about average content director salaries in Canada than what's available for HR online. Currently, any attempts to seek greater salary equity are met with 'well that's what our data tells us."

It's honestly to the point where, if I were to hire a U.S. based subordinate to help me -- that subordinate would make more money than me. Despite being several levels more junior. lol

I haven’t read the full report yet so maybe it’s in there, but to @Amanda Henry’s point, I’d be curious to see ranges on these too, or approx. ranges. When I worked in-house (been a couple years at this point), I never made close to $91k, even as a manager.

@Amanda Henry i did a quick analysis of anyone with a director title:
• USA - $167,515
• Canada - $120,867
• Europe - $121,667

@Rachel bc of the way we do this, there is huge variability in titles, esp for managers. the analysis is basically: "what's the average income for anyone with the word 'manager' in the title?"

Thank you so much for doing that @Jimmy Daly (Superpath). So, there's definitely a huge gap in average salary between Canada/US. I primarily work at US-based remote startups where they hire me because I'm more qualified than the US candidates and then pay me... much less BUT are willing to pay anyone more junior that's US based more than me... including direct reports. And it feels pretty garbage lol.

that's insane and so frustrating

Canada/US definitely have a weird situation going on in that there's literally no reason to justify paying Canadians less other than which side of the border you're on. The usual language/timezone/etc. things that can be explained away don't apply at all—and I'd argue the cost of living is the same (after you account for the conversion rate).

I live in Vancouver so it's pretty close! It's definitely higher than folks in the US outside SF and NYC.
The actual reason why Canadian tech jobs at Canadian companies pay less is that we don't have the same venture capital network and Canadian startups raise less money on average. So, when you're working remotely at a US-based startup that's getting US VC dollars, there's really no valid argument for paying Canadians less. Or indexing salary to Canadian tech company's pay. Not all US companies I've gotten offers at do this though. My current company adjusted my salary up to US rates then decided to surprise me when promoting me to director with the fact that they weren't doing that anymore. So made me work so hard for a promotion only to not really give any salary bump.
