Shipping cost gut check: Our shipping costs through our 3PL for a ~15 oz product that costs $25 are currently hovering between $12-$16 depending on zone, which seems kind of crazy to me. Is this normal or are we being ripped off here??

Seems high to me - What size box is being used, this may be causing the price to be higher

Is this in the US?

Amanda Berg June 18, 2024 at 09:37 PM

Yeah US only. Warehouse is in PA. Packaging is our own bookfold box - 13" x 9" x 1.5" (product is an indie magazine)

What parcel service are you / they using?

Aaron Alpeter June 19, 2024 at 12:27 PM

Feels like you might be using an expedited service. I imagine if you were to reevaluate your shipping matrix that you’d be able to take some cost out. Happy to share notes if helpful.

Hi Amanda, based on the packing size, here are the dimensional weights based on courier dim factors (dim divisors). I bolded the larger of dimensional weight and scale weight for each:
• 139 divisor = 1.26 lb dim weight vs 0.9375 lb (15oz) scale weight
• 166 divisor = 1.05 lb dim weight vs 0.9375 lb (15oz) scale weight
• 192 divisor = 0.91 lb dim weight vs 0.9375 lb (15oz) scale weight
• 225 divisor = 0.78 lb dim weight vs 0.9375 lb (15oz) scale weight
• 250 divisor = 0.70 lb dim weight vs 0.9375 lb (15oz) scale weight
Like @Aaron Alpeter suggested, they may be using an expedited service, or they may have a bunch of margin added on top of the courier rate.
