Hi all!

Would you all have any guidance on whether it’s better to legally change the company name entirely or proceed with a dba?

We’re rebranding from Monetta to PupScout and are considering two options for our incorporated company name:

  1. Changing from Monetta Inc. to PupScout Inc.
  2. Adding PupScout as a “doing business as” (dba) under Monetta Inc. We’d like to move forward with trademarking PupScout as soon as possible. While trademarking looks straightforward, we want to make sure we address the company name decision first.

Thanks in advance.

p.s. Google Research and the USPTO shows no conflicting usage, except for a similar mark, PupScouts, which has been abandoned since 2016.

The only thing I can think of is, if the company ends up wanting to build more than one product later, it’s tricky to manage the brand when the company is named the same as the first product.

You may be able to future-proof if you do something like “PupScout — by Monetta.”

That said, I’m curious to hear what others have to say on this, myself!
