For those of you who do freelancing services: Have you worked with a lead generation team, and have any thoughts about when and when not to work with that kind of team?

@Dan Hiester good question, I'm sure there are some great services out there, but I've had a low success rate with external lead gen partners.

Personally, I've had better success bringing on some people internally and working with them to develop our own unique capability.

If you have the time and finances to test some different partners then that might be easier if you want to remain a freelancer. You'll likely find quality and voice best if you continue to do this yourself. If you're scaling a team, it's great to build that capability internally.

Hope this helps!

@Dan Hiester I probably get 4 spam emails a day from lead gen teams, and for me it has never made sense because I don't trust an external team to properly articulate my value prop. I also operate a lower volume business as I only work with 2-3 clients at a time- depending on the nature of your service it might be worth a small test as an experiment, but personally I think it devalues my brand significantly by farming the first conversation out to someone I don't know. Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want to chat further as you evaluate!

Most those lead generation “partners” cannot generate enough leads for their own businesses. Stay way. Save your reputation. That being said, check out Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port.

Awesome! Thanks for all these answers, everyone!

There’s a team who reached out to me, and seems really eager to work with me. It’s a little tempting to get the help in speeding up my marketing operation, but… I think what I’m really selling is my expertise, and my unusual knowledge. I don’t think that can be delegated successfully.

I try hard not to be too egotistical about what I have to offer, but I know that my blend of design, frontend engineering, and familiarity with founders and startup communities is pretty rare.

At bare minimum, I think I would want to become familiar enough with lead gen teams to make an informed estimate of what team might be a good fit for my business, what team might be a better fit for a friend’s business, etc.
